What is Coffee Granita and How to Make It at Home
Make this perfect traditional Italian summer treat more easily. Learn how you can make Coffee Granita at home with quality instant coffee.
Granita, or Granita Siciliana if you are making a trip to Italy in the near future, is an Italian delicacy often served after a meal as a dessert.
This delicious coffee drink is partially frozen to give you the feeling of enjoying something frozen while indulging in the realm of coffee or fruit flavors. Granita can come in many different flavors, but the most common flavor (the best flavor) is coffee. You can’t go wrong with something that is coffee flavored and is frozen!
Available all over Italy, Granita is similar to sorbet but with more room to taste the actual ice crystals. It is not as creamy and fluffy as ice cream is, nor is it rough and smooth as sorbet is. The texture of granita lies somewhere between the two ends; similar to a coffee slushie.
How to easily make Coffee Granita with instant coffee?
What is actually inside the granita isn’t far fetched from its name. The sweet treat is made with mostly water, sugar, and a variety of flavors that all chill and freeze together. Depending on the season, the granita can be made with fresh fruits, nuts, chocolate, and other flavors.
Ingredients per 1 serving
- 2 tsp Waka Instant Coffee
- 1 tbsp white sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1 1/2 cups of ice
- Chocolate syrup and whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
Make the strong instant coffee by mixing 2 tsp of Waka Coffee (or 1 packet) and 1/2 cup of cold water until granules are fully dissolved. Pro tip: mix the granules first with 1 tbsp of hot water for the coffee to dissolve faster.
Add 1 cup of ice into a blender, and turn it on for a few seconds, until ice is slightly crushed.
Add brewed coffee, vanilla extract (optional), sugar and blend for 30 seconds until a slushy-like consistency has formed. Add more ice and blend for additional 20 seconds. You don't want to over blend to keep the icy consistency.
Top with chocolate syrup and whipped cream if desired.
Enjoy!
