Why peppermint is instantly making you think of winter?
One story about the history of the peppermint candy dates back to 1670, in Cologne, Germany. That year, a local choirmaster looked for an idea for how to keep the kids occupied and quiet in church.
He asked a local candy man to make sugar sticks, which he could then hand out to the kids before the holiday services. The candy man bent the sugar-sticks into canes to resemble a shepherd’s hook.
Another version about the origins of the popular Christmas candy is associated to the United States. It is believed that a candy maker in Indiana was the first to have bent one end of a sugar stick to form a "J" for "Jesus."
While the origins of the peppermint candy are unclear, one thing we do know is that the mass production of candy canes is inherently American. Bob McCormack, a candy man from Georgia, was the first to mass produce the popular cornered candy in 1920. He produced candy canes by the thousands at his factory in Albany, Georgia.
