What is The Kentucky Derby?
The Kentucky Derby is the most prestigious American horse race. It was established in 1875 and now runs annually on the first Saturday of May in Churchill Downs racetrack, Louisville, Kentucky.
The History of The Kentucky Derby
The racetrack opened its gates on May 17th, 1875, when the Louisville Jockey Club sponsored the very first Kentucky Derby. A total of fifteen three-year-old Thoroughbred horses raced one and a half miles in front of a cheering crowd of approximately 10,000 attendees. Aristides was the first winner of the Kentucky Derby.
The idea of the Derby came to Meriwether Lewis Clark, the grandson of the American explorer, William Clark when he traveled to Europe. While there, Clark attended the Epsom Derby in England which was one of the main inspirations to his idea of creating a spectacle horse racing event in the States.
The Horse Instant Coffee
Instant Coffee was born in 2020 (right when whipped coffee, made by mixing instant coffee, went viral on TikTok). He is a Dark Bay or Brown Colt horse and he might compete in the 2023 Kentucky Derby. Instant Coffee is also the son of Bolt d’Oro. Bolt d’Oro was one of the early favorites for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, he finished twelfth in that race.
Instant Coffee's trainer is Brad H. Cox, who is not new to the Derby. Cox won the 2021 Kentucky Derby via disqualification when he initially ran second with the horse Mandaloun and the connections for Medina Spirit lost their court battles.
The 149th Kentucky Derby will start on Saturday, May 6th, 2023 at Churchill Downs. With nowadays the number of competitors capped at 20 horses, Kentucky Derby hopefuls must compete in a series of races known as the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Contenders earn a set amount of points based on how they place in each race, with the 20 top-ranking horses earning the opportunity for a spot in the starting gate!
