What is Affogato?

Affogato:

what is affogato coffee?

The word “Affogato” translates in Italian to “drowned,” which is perfectly fitting for this gelato and espresso dessert. The dessert originated in Italy and is usually served after lunch or dinner. The Affogato is a modern creation but incorporates two old loves; espresso and gelato.

How it is made

Traditionally, Affogato is made with 1 shot of espresso (made with high quality beans) poured over 1 scoop of gelato, usually vanilla or hazelnut.

First, Gelato is made by cooling and freezing an egg yolk custard (made with whole milk, egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla). Second, Espresso is made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee beans. Finally, the creamy gelato is scooped out into a mug or cup and drizzled with a fresh shot of espresso. Yummy!

Why Affogato rocks

The Affogato combines two incredibly things; coffee and dessert. This sweet treat is an ideal pick-me-up due to both the caffeine and sugar content. It also pairs perfectly with hot days as the cold gelato cools you down while still delivering caffeine from an otherwise hot coffee drink. This dessert-drink is perfect for those with a sweet tooth and warm climate.
